Schubert and ADELE: What's the Connection?
Born hundreds of years apart, it may be hard to see how an older classical composer can influence a contemporary artist like Adele. But like Adele, many other contemporary artists have been influenced by classical music, whether consciously aware or not. This project aims to explore the connection between older music and artists and contemporary artists and how they are influenced and keep classical music alive in their work.

"O Du, Mein Holder Abendstern" (Translated)
Like a premonition of death, darkness covers the land, and envelops the valley in its sombre shroud; the soul that longs for the highest grounds, is fearful of the darkness before it takes flight. There you are, oh loveliest star, your soft light you send into the distance; your beam pierces the gloomy shroud and you show the way out of the valley. Oh, my gracious evening star, I always greet you like happily: with my heart that she never betrayed take to her as she drifts past you, when she soars from this earthly vale, to transform into blessed angel! |
"Chasing Pavements"
I've made up my mind, Don't need to think it over, If I'm wrong I am right, Don't need to look no further, This ain't lust, I know this is love but, If I tell the world, I'll never say enough, Cause it was not said to you, And that's exactly what I need to do, If I'm in love with you, Should I give up, Or should I just keep chasing pavements? Even if it leads nowhere, Or would it be a waste? Even If I knew my place should I leave it there? Should I give up, Or should I just keep chasing pavements? Even if it leads nowhere |
Both songs deal with unrequited love. In Schubert's lied, he talks about his love for a piano student of his and the fact that he loves her but may never gain her love because of class divides. In Adele's song, she talks about unrequited love, but from the other perspective. This song is about heartbreak but she wonders whether or not she should keep trying to pursue this man even though he does not love her.
